When he bemoaned the high cost of diesel, feeds, and the exchange rate in the nation on Tuesday, former president Olusegun Obasanjo appeared to be experiencing what many Nigerians are.
The former president claimed that the high cost of diesel has been having an adverse effect on his ability to produce fish.
At the South-West Fish Farmers' Congress held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, he spoke in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State (OOPL). Obasanjo stated that unless Nigerian fish farmers come together and agree on sustainable rates that may be adopted to keep them in business, the rising cost of diesel and the constant increase in the price of fish food will finally drive them out of business.
He asserted that producers could no longer depend on customers to come by and purchase the fish for a price that suited them.
According to him, many consumers do not consider how the current state of the economy may affect the supply of these fish.
He said that a kilogram of fish costs N1,400 to produce at the present price of N800 per litre of diesel.
According to him, in order to make very marginal profit, the farmers can’t sell less than N1,500 as anything short of that amounts to outright loss.
He said, “The price of diesel has gone high because the management of this country is not what it should be.
We are starting with South-West and in a matter of time it will be all over the country.”
