Ranil Wickeremesinghe, the prime minister of Sri Lanka, has been chosen by parliament to lead the island nation.


After months of widespread protests, Mr. Wickremesinghe must restore public order and steer the nation out of its economic crisis.


With 134 votes to 82, he easily defeated party rival Dullus Alahapperuma in the parliamentary vote on Wednesday.


Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former president of Sri Lanka, left the nation last week.


Thousands of protestors attacked his presidential mansions and other government facilities, demanding his resignation. He fled to the Maldives and subsequently Singapore.


They had also demanded the resignation of Mr. Wickremesinghe, who had been named prime minister in May.


In protests against his leadership, demonstrators torched his personal residence and attacked his prime ministerial office in Colombo. 

Sri Lanka is effectively bankrupt and facing acute shortages of food, fuel and other basic supplies.

After his election, Mr Wickremesinghe told parliament the nation was “in a very difficult situation” adding that “we have big challenges ahead”.
