On June 1, US President Joe Biden stated that his government had no intention of deposing Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The newest development comes less than three months after he stated that Putin should step down as president.
Biden's altered opinion was referenced in a New York Times op-ed.
In March, he made a statement that prompted the White House to explain Biden's comments.
Following the invasion of Ukraine, US President Barack Obama claimed Putin "cannot stay in power."

Biden went on to say:
A war between NATO and Russia is not something we want.
As much as I disagree with Mr. Putin and feel his actions to be counterproductive, As much as I disagree with Mr. Putin and think his conduct reprehensible, the US will not attempt to overthrow him in Moscow.
We will not be directly involved in this conflict unless we or our allies are attacked; either by deploying American troops to fight in Ukraine or by attacking Russian forces.
We do neither encourage or enable Ukraine to strike outside of its boundaries.
We don't want to keep the war going only to hurt Russia.
Because free people refuse to live in a society of hopelessness and gloom, Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia.
We will live in a different world, one based on democracy and principle, hope and light, decency and dignity, freedom and possibilities.
For the love of God, this man cannot stay in power.
Later, a White House spokesperson attempted to clarify Biden's comments, saying:
Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region, according to the President.
He wasn't talking about Putin's power in Russia or the possibility of regime change.
