TIGER WOODS GETS EMOTIONAL ON GOLF HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

#jaiyeorie After a poignant statement from his 14-year-old daughter Sam, Tiger Woods held back tears as he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

Following Sam's comment that she didn't know whether her father would survive last year's horrible car accident, Woods recalled overcoming racism as a junior player and the support of his parents, coaches, and friends.

"I didn't come here by myself," the 46-year-old American explained. "I had incredible parents, mentors, and friends who stood with me in the darkest of times and rejoiced with me at the brightest.

"Actually, it's a team prize." All of you made it possible for me to get here, and I simply want to express my gratitude from the bottom of my heart."

Woods has won 15 majors – second only to Jack Nicklaus' 18 – and a joint-record 82 times on the PGA Tour with Sam Snead in a brilliant career that may not be done yet.

Nicklaus paid tribute in a video message, adding, "I first saw him when he was about 13." I saw this thin child hit a few balls and was told he was going to be great. We'd have to see about that, I said. "Now we've seen."

"Sport needs excitement," remarked PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. There aren't many people who live up to it. "Tiger went above and beyond."

He has a long list of playing accomplishments, including a record 683 weeks as world number one, but he is also known for his work with TGR.

His playing achievements are extensive, including a record 683 weeks at world number one, but he is also known for his work with the TGR Foundation, which he founded in 1996 to enhance children's health, education, and welfare.

With his 12-shot victory at the Masters in 1997, Woods became the first black golfer to win a major, and from 1999 to 2002, he won seven out of eleven majors, including a four-year stretch known as the 'Tiger Slam.'

His "darkest periods" included the breakup of his marriage to Elin Nordegren when he acknowledged to having many affairs in December 2009.

He also underwent three surgery for knee and back issues before returning to win and end a five-year skid.He then went on to win his first major in 11 years at the 2019 Masters, earning his fifth Green Jacket.

After his triumph at Augusta National, he hugged Sam and his son Charlie, just as he had done with his parents 22 years before.

“This is why you deserve this, because you’re a fighter,” Sam had said in her earlier speech.

The ceremony, which took place at the PGA Tour’s new headquarters in Florida on the eve of its flagship Players Championship, also saw three other people inducted into the Hall of Fame to take the total number to 164.
Former PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, four-time women's major champion Susie Maxwell Berning, and late golf course developer Marion Hollins, who founded Cypress Hill in California, were also honored.
