Emery set to become Newcastle coach

Villarreal head coach, Unai Emery, is set to become the next manager of newly rich Premier League side Newcastle United.

Sky Sports reports that Emery has emerged as the favourite to succeed Steve Bruce, whose contract was terminated last month.

Bruce was relieved of his duties last month after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, PIF, bought Newcastle for £305m.

The report added that Emery is the leading candidate to take up the managerial vacancy at Newcastle, adding that the Spaniard is ahead of Lucien Favre, Eddie Howe and Roberto Martinez for the Magpies job.

Newcastle will have to pay £5m worth of compensation to get Emery out of his current deal at Villarreal.

Emery, a former Arsenal, Sevilla and PSG manager, is open to hearing what Newcastle have to say.

Addressing questions about the vacant position at Newcastle before Villarreal’s Champions League clash with Young Boys, Emery said: “I don’t know anything about Newcastle.”

Emery was appointed Villarreal manager in July 2020, and led them to the Europa League title last season, beating Manchester United on penalties in the final.
