Candyman, the highly anticipated film from Jordan Peele will arrive in theaters on August 27.
Here’s the scoop on the Nia DaCosta-directed film:
As far as residents remember, housing projects in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by an oral ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook in his hand, easily summoned by those who dare to repeat his name five times in the mirror. Today, a decade after the destruction of Cabrini's last tower, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), are moving into a luxury attic in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognizing and moving.
Given that Anthony’s painting career is on the verge of a stalemate, a chance encounter with a former Cabrini-Green student (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the horrible true story behind Candyman. Eager to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, and encouraged by his white art dealer, Anthony begins to explore these gruesome details in his studio as new inspiration for paintings, unknowingly opening the door to a complex past that unravels his common sense and unleashes a terrifying wave violence that puts him on a collision with destiny.
