Adenrele Sonariwo opened a dynamic contemporary art gallery at Los Angeles, CA. 8215 Melrose Ave.

The inaugural exhibition at new Los Angeles gallery ‘Orita Meta- Crossroads’ features works from three female artists: Tonia Nneji, Chidinma Nnoli, and Marcellina Akpojotor. The exhibition explores from different perspectives the dialogue on gender and femininity between 3 exciting women artists working in Nigeria today.

Highlighting issues such as purity culture, sexual autonomy, safe spaces and intimate dialogue as well as critical reflections on identity and trauma, the exhibition considers the ways in which each artist explores the idea of femininity in completely varying methods, from their stylistic treatment of the form to their diverse engagement with contemporary issues which include the journey to female empowerment in contemporary society as well as the ways in which hegemonic, patriarchal and religious power structures contribute to the constant marginalisation of women’s voices and experiences.

The exhibition opens on February 1, 2021 and is on view through March 28, 2021. Accessible by appointment only.

Work details:
1. Tonia Nneji, 'Sit and Listen', 2020, acrylic and oil on canvas, 48 x 60in
