USA finally removes Sudan from ‘state sponsors of terror’ list

#jaiyeorie The United States has formally removed Sudan's label as a "state sponsor of terrorism," 27 years after blacklisting the country. The announcement was announced by the US Embassy in Khartoum and takes effect on Monday. "The 45-day deadline for notifying Congress has expired and the Secretary of State has signed a notice stating that the abolition of the appointment of the Sudanese state sponsor for terrorism is in force as of today [December 14] and will be published in the Federal Register." , the US embassy said on Facebook. Removal from the list has been a top priority for the Sudanese transitional government, which has been in power since August last year following the removal of longtime President Omar al-Bashir following months of protests against his rule. The U.S. government added Sudan to its list of "state sponsors of terrorism" in 1993 over allegations that al-Bashir's government supported "terrorist" groups. With this proclamation, Sudan has become technically unsuitable for debt relief and much-needed financing of large international institutions, amid an economic crisis marked by a shortage of wheat and fuel.

Sudan’s acting finance minister said on Monday that the US had committed to providing support for wheat and other commodities over four years as well as for debt relief.

“The US government has committed to providing over $1bn that will support Sudan on its road to debt relief … This is in addition to in-kind support that includes the provision of wheat and other commodities over four years,” acting Finance Minister Heba Ahmed said.
