Nigeria’s Hero Award - Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi Emerges 1st-Ever Recipient Of Global Citizen Prize

Nigerian activist, Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi is the winner of the Global Citizen Award 2020: Nigerian Heroes Award for his efforts to stop sexual and gender-based violence in the country. Through Owosobi’s leadership of Stand To End Rape (STER), a youth social enterprise that advocates against sexual violence, provides prevention mechanisms and supports survivors with psycho social services, becomes the first award winner.

 The Country Hero Award will be presented during the Global Citizen Prize ceremony. According to Global Citizen, the award recognizes “individuals around the world who have shown exceptional commitment to the UN global goals in their country and globally, and advocated for the most vulnerable people. The award was presented to individuals and organizations in Nigeria, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. " 

They announced that each of the honorary activists will receive $ 10,000 to support projects in their communities. Oluwaseun was appointed one of the UN’s young leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals in September 2020. She was also named on the TIME list of the "100 next" in November 2019 and as the Young Person of the Commonwealth in 2019. Responding to the award, Oluwaseun told Global Citizen:

“I am elated to be recognised as the first Nigeria’s Hero Award winner because it’s coming at a defining moment. The recognition puts a global spotlight on the work I’ve done in the past six years to defy the culture of silence in Nigeria and promote the safety and well-being of women. I’m joining the global network of Global Citizens!

This recognition highlights the advocacy efforts of  Stand To End Rape Initiative (STER) and fosters opportunities for networking, collaborations and funding.”
