On Tuesday, December 8, Forbes announced its list of the 100 most powerful women in 2020, which will include influential leaders from 30 countries in politics, entertainment, business and many others. German Chancellor Angela Merkel took first place for the tenth year in a row, and European Central Bank Governor Christine Lagarde was second in a row.
Newly elected US Vice President Kamala Harris found the list for the first time, debuting in 3rd place. Forbes said that the "rapid rise of American politics" "catapulted" her to the list. The top five are Ursula von der Leyen, the first woman president of the European Commission, and Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill Foundation, and Melinda Gates. Gates retained the title of the most powerful woman in philanthropy, according to Forbes. There are 17 newcomers on Forbes ’list this year, including 67, Mackenzie Scott, a former Bezos, who pledged last year to donate half of her money to charity after her divorce from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was finalized. The list also includes some big names from the music industry, with pop sensations Rihanna and Beyoncé ranking 69th and 72nd, respectively. Taylor Swift fell behind at 82, after the success of her surprise album Folklore, which sold a million copies.
