Lashana Lynch Speaks On Backlash After Being Cast As 1st Black Female 007

#jaiyeorie Lashana Lynch will make history as the first black woman to play 007 in the upcoming Bond movie, No Time To Die, but she received backlash in the form of “attacks” and “abuse” when the news of her role went public.

Lynch said she took a break from all social media and she had to remind herself not to take the comments personally. I am one Black woman — if it were another Black woman cast in the role, it would have been the same conversation, she would have got the same attacks, the same abuse. I just have to remind myself that the conversation is happening and that I’m a part of something that will be very, very revolutionary.

Lashana Lynch will play the new 007 agent Nomi in the upcoming film alongside James Bond. She said she was a little fearful of working alongside Daniel Craig, who has played James Bond since 2006, but after talking with the filmmakers, Lynch realized that her ideas for her role were in alignment with theirs. A character that is too slick, a cast-iron figure?

That’s completely against what I stand for. I didn’t want to waste an opportunity when it came to what Nomi might represent. Lynch wanted to make sure her role would stay true to her ethnicity and the black community. I searched for at least one moment in the script where Black audience members would nod their heads, tutting at the reality but glad to see their real life represented. In every project I am part of, no matter the budget or genre, the Black experience that I’m presenting needs to be 100 percent authentic.

No Time To Die was originally slated for release in November 2019, but due to the pandemic, it has been pushed to April 2, 2021. See the trailer for No Time To Die below: This will be the 25th edition in the bond series and the first to have a black female 007 agent.
