The short film, written and directed by Cherry which featured the voice acting of Issa Rae, shows a day in the life of Stephen, a Black father who learns how to do the natural and well-grown hair of his 7-year-old daughter Zuri, due to the absence of her mother.
“Hair love” has been described as an “ode to loving your natural hair, and a celebration of daddies and daughters everywhere”.
The short film took home an Academy Award in 2020 for best animated short film. Last May, it was released as a children’s book with illustrations by Vashti Harrison.
It will also be developed into an animated TV show at HBO Max called “Young Love,” based on the characters from “Hair Love”.
The 8-year-old Carter already has numerous accolades under her belt. Despite her age, Blue Ivy is already building up quite the résumé for herself by frequently collaborating with her parents on a variety of projects, most recently appearing in Beyoncé’s Disney+ film “Black Is King”.
Earlier this year, she became the youngest winner to score a BET trophy, when she took home the HER Award for working on the single “Brown Skin Girl”, from the “Lion King: The Gift” soundtrack with Beyoncé, SAINt JHN and WizKid.
In February, Blue Ivy picked up an NAACP award for the song as well as a Soul Train Award in 2019.
She also has appeared on multiple Jay-Z’s tracks, including “Glory” and “Family Feud,” as well as on Beyonce’s “Blue” and her rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” off her “Homecoming: The Live Album”.
With the audio performance for “Hair Love,” Blue Ivy could contend for a Grammy in the Best Spoken Word Album category.
Her mother has 24 Grammy Awards while her father has 22.
What a winning family!
