Lizzo Shines on Vogue’s October Issue + Read 5 Quotes

Inside her cover story, Lizzo talks about her music to the upcoming election On Being Black: My dad taught me very early on about what being Black in this country is. When I learned about Emmett Till, I was so young. And I have never forgotten his face.

On Creating Music: Well, I’m a Black woman. So I can do just about anything I want to do.’ How dare these people sit up and tell me who my music is going to appeal to or not? On The 2020 Election:

Having a Black woman as vice president would be great. I’m just always rooting for Black people. But I want actual change to happen. In the laws. Not a temporary fix to a deep-rooted, systemic issue.

On Voting: I just want to encourage people to register to vote. That is the most important thing to me. Because there’s a lot of upset people, and there’s a lot of people who have power. There’s a lot of voter suppression in Black communities. But there’s a lot of angry white kids now. And I’m like, ‘Yo, register to vote. Go out. You won’t get suppressed if you try to go to your ballot box.’ You know? I think it’s important to remind people of what they can do. My job isn’t to tell you how to vote. But my job is hopefully to inspire you to vote…to activate you, so that you can take your protest to the ballot box.

On Being Body Normative: It’s lazy for me to just say I’m body positive at this point. It’s easy. I would like to be body-normative. I want to normalize my body.
