Kamala Harris ‘Rooted In Justice’ Picture Book Released

Long before Kamala Harris became the first woman, first Black person and first South Asian American to serve as U.S. Vice President, there was a little girl growing up in Oakland and accompanying her parents to civil-rights marches.

That story became Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice, a 2020 picture-book biography written by award-winning author Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Laura Freeman. The book traces Harris’ journey from childhood and her early encounters with activism to her career in law, politics and her historic presidential campaign. 

Kamala Harris, Senator of the United States, is the subject of a new picture book.

Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing announced prize-winning author Nikki Grimes has written “Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice.” 

It's when a person's life becomes a story young people are invited to inherit.

Harris' journey is presented through themes of freedom, justice, perseverance and using one's voice — turning a political biography into an early lesson in what a life of public service can look like.

The bigger story is the legacy being introduced to the next generation.

The book, released on August 25, features illustrations by Laura Freeman.

Kamala has made history as the first Black woman and the first Asian American woman named to a major party presidential ticket!
