Now she says she will not be taking the part in that production.
The drama started during a recent Instagram Live interview in which the actress told hairstylist Christin Brown that she was preparing to portray a trans man. The role was apparently put on the back burner as Berry worked on her 2020 directorial debut Bruised.
“[It’s] a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man,” Berry says, as first reported by queer news site Pink News. “She’s a character in a project I love that I might be doing.”
It wasn’t long before the trans community called her out for not only misgendering the character but how dangerous it is for a cis woman who portray such a sensitive role.
Now, she says she has backed away from that project.
She wrote on her social media:
“Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,” she wrote. “I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
