The Google News Initiative has set up an Emergency Journalism Aid Fund
to provide emergency assistance to thousands of small, medium and local news reporters worldwide.

Funding is open to news organizations that produce original news for
local communities during a crisis, and ranges from tiny thousands of dollars
to small hyper-local newsrooms to tens of thousands of larger newsrooms, varying
 by region.

Starting Tuesday, April 14, publishers everywhere can apply for funding.
“We’ve made this as streamlined as possible to ensure we get help to eligible publishers all over the world.
At the end of the process, we’ll announce who has received funding and how publishers are spending the money,” says Richard Gingras, VP, News, Google.

Local news is an important resource for keeping people and communities
connected at their best. Today, it has an increasing role to play in reporting
local closures or protection from home orders, school and park closures, and
information on how COVID-19 affects daily life.

But this role is challenging as the new sector deals with job cuts, indirect
job cuts and reductions as a result of the economic downturn caused by COVID-19.

Google.org acknowledges that covering the coronavirus pandemic could take
journalists to the forefront of a million-dollar, million-dollar international
journalism center that plans to provide immediate resources to support journalists
worldwide, and the Columbia Journalism School’s Dart Center. journalism and
trauma, which helps journalists expose themselves to traumatic events experienced
 during a crisis.

This news builds on other efforts Google has made to support the industry and connect people to quality information at the moment.
“We believe it is important to do what we can to alleviate the financial pressures on newsrooms, and will continue to look at other ways to help with more to announce soon,” Gingras says.
