Cambridge University agrees to return bronze cockerel looted from Nigeria in the 19th century

Cambridge University has agreed to return a bronze cockerel looted from Nigeria in the 19th century.
Known as a Benin Bronze, it was snatched by British colonial forces and donated to Jesus College in 1905 by the father of a student.
The college’s unprecedented step follows a campaign by students against the ‘spoils of war’.
It will be one of the first bronzes to be returned to Nigeria by a major institution since thousands were stolen during an expedition in 1897.
The piece was removed from public view in March 2016 after students protested that it celebrated a ‘colonial narrative’.

Nigeria’s Ndidi Nwuneli appointed Rockefeller Foundation board member

Ndidi Nwuneli, founder of LEAP Africa and co-founder of Sahel Consulting, has been appointed to the board of trustees of The Rockefeller Foundation.

According to a statement released by the foundation, Nwuneli was appointed on the board alongside Agnes Binagwaho, the vice-chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda.
Their tenures as members of the board began on November 21.

Commenting on the appointment, Richard D. Parsons, the board chair said: “It is a pleasure to welcome Agnes and Ndidi to our board of trustees. As the foundation works to lift up the most vulnerable people in communities around the world, their deep global development expertise and longstanding commitment to improving lives will be invaluable to the organization”.

Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has weighed in on the controversial Hate Speech Bill, saying nobody can Muzzle Nigerians and deny them freedom of speech.


General Babangida pointed out that there was even no basis for the bill which has passed the second reading in the Senate insisting that no one can deny Nigerians their fundamental rights.

Lagos To Register Places Of Worship ‘To Ensure Sanity’

The Lagos State Government says plans are on to register religious houses in order to ensure sanity in the state.
The Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, made this known on Tuesday in Alausa, during a stakeholders meeting with the Nigeria Inter-religious Council.
Akinbile-Yussuf said the registration, which was supposed to begin by mid 2020, would assist to identify worship centres that are being used to perpetrate illegalities in the state.


She said that having a database of all religious bodies in the state would enable ease of reference, as well as ensuring effective communication.

‘The song broke the record for highest-charting holiday (Christmas/New Year) song on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 by a solo artist. The song also set the bar for most-streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours by a female artist, with 10,819,009 streams last December, as well as the record for most weeks in the U.K. singles Top 10 chart for a Christmas song at 20 weeks.’

Frenchman Jean-Claude Lacote, wanted since 1996 for murdering a British businessman has been caught in Abidjan, after 23-years on the run.

He even reportedly hosted a reality TV crime programme and staged an prison break. Lacote, 53, and his wife Hilde Van Acker, 56, were each sentenced to life in their absence for the killing of businessman Marcus Mitchell who was shot twice in the head in Belgium in 1996.
