Falz the Bahd Guy, dressed as Pennywise, the unsettling clown from Stephen King’s It, turning 29th birthday celebration into something closer to a piece of pop-culture theatre. Falz was not just celebrating another year. He was creating an image people could remember.
He threw a haunted house themed bashed which was attended by top celebrities Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Simi,Toolz Capt Demuren,Tobi Bakre Ifu Ennada,Alex Asoghowa and more.
There is something particularly revealing about choosing Pennywise. The costume mattered because Falz understood that a recognisable character could do more work than an ordinary birthday outfit.
A birthday traditionally carries ideas of youth, gratitude, celebration and renewal. Falz introduced fear into that vocabulary. The result was playful, theatrical and slightly strange — exactly the kind of contrast that makes a celebrity moment stick.
In 2019, Nigerian entertainment culture is become increasingly visual. Instagram was no longer simply a place to document life; it was becoming a stage where celebrities could construct worlds around themselves.
Pennywise carries a cultural language: childhood memory, horror, absurdity and discomfort. By stepping into the character, Falz borrowed that language and placed himself inside a global pop-culture reference while still making it part of his own Nigerian celebrity identity.
The contemporary African celebrity increasingly exists between cultures. Local identity does not require isolation from global references. Anime, Hollywood, luxury fashion, internet humour, music and Nigerian street culture can sit inside the same visual universe.
Falz has always played with identity — the rapper, the lawyer, the comic character, the socially conscious artist, the fashion figure. Pennywise fits naturally into that larger pattern: celebrity as performance, rather than simply celebrity as personality.
The haunted house decorated by Bisola Borha of TrendyBee events had mummies, zombies, coffins, trantulas and many more scary objects as the his guests also stepped into the haunted house dressed in their pre Halloween costumes.
Falz came through as Mr. Pennywise, the title character in Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel “It”
Why do we remember some birthdays and forget others?
It is because the memorable ones give us something beyond the date — a character, an idea, an image, a feeling.
Falz's 29th birthday was therefore less about getting older than about understanding the power of becoming visually unforgettable.
A birthday can mark time, the costume tells us more about the cultural moment than the cake ever could.
Jaiyeorie — this is why it matters.
