Army’s Planned Nationwide “Operation Positive Identification” Exercise

A viral advisory on social media about the Nigerian army planning a nationwide “Operation Positive Identification” (OPI) exercise.
In a Twitter post on Tuesday, the Army informed the general public that the security advisory which was assumed to commence from November 1, 2019, to December 23, 2019, should be disregarded.
The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, called for a delay on the planned OPI by the Nigerian Army, to allow the Army to carry out more public sensitization. Adding that Nigerians in the rural areas would be more affected if the November 1st 2019 due date is allowed. As part of the resolution, the House Committee on Army was also mandated to liaise with the Chief of Army staff to come to a reasonable conclusion.

OPI  is an operation the military claims would allow Nigerians to provide documentary proof of identity to separate citizens from aliens and to checkmate bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers, ethnic militias and other criminal elements in the society.
The advisory which was branded with the Army logo was quoted as “Planned Nationwide Military Operation by the Nigerian Armed Forces. It has been officially declared that effective from 1st November 2019 to 23rd December 2019, residents shall witness large numbers of uniformed Nigerian Army Personnel parading the roads in an exercise known as OPI”.
The advisory added that residents should move around with valid means of identification, and obey all directives by security agents.
