She said “ok be an educated chef” when I was 16.
At that at point, I was ready to go straight to culinary school. She Lowkey hoped I’d get out of “it”
Graduation day... “Mummy here’s your certificate. Now it’s my time” “Ah what would people say?, You are cooking?!” She wondered out loud sometimes. “Can’t you ask your uncles for a job?” She would try and convince me. “Mummy I am not interested, this is it it”
She would tease me “MaiSuya! How market? ” when I started BBQ-ing but all the while she was the same person that would give me my first business lesson, cook the Nigerian soups for the board meetings I used cater for, tell me that something wasn’t tasty enough that it needed more of this and that. Same person that give me her car to shop around Lagos and always spoiling her clutch.
I guess there was hope in there and her fear of me failing needed security. In summary Love. Love that wanted to protect at all cost. What a Lioness. .
Thank God, today, this MaiSuya market is paying off. .
