Senator-elect for Kwara Central senatorial district, Dr Yahaya Oloriegbe, has revealed how he was able to defeat Saraki in the just concluded National Assembly election.
Oloriegbe said he was able to defeat the Senate President because of the perceived failures of the administration of Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed, a political godson of Saraki.
He said his victory at the February 23 poll against Saraki was an indication that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ended the Saraki political dynasty after ruling Kwara State for about 40 years, newtelegraph reported.
According to him, the Senate President also shot himself in the foot by fighting the APC. Saraki, he further said, also worked against President Muhammadu Buhari, who is perceived as a great friend of Ilorin East Emirate, given his relationship with late General Tunde Idiagbon, his Chief of General Staff while he was Head of State.
Oloriegbe, an international aid worker with the World Health Organisation (WHO) who contested on the platform of the APC, polled 123,808 votes to cause an upset, defeating Saraki, who contested on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and polled only 68,994 votes across the four local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
Speaking with New Telegraph in Ilorin yesterday, Oloriegbe said the outcome of the election was evident that the people could no longer tolerate the Saraki dynasty, which has ruled the state for the better part of 40 years. Oloriegbe, who contested the same seat against Saraki in the 2011 general election, said even at that time, the Saraki political structure allegedly rigged him out of the race.
His words: “There are severally things that probably have changed. But there are certain things that have not changed. Even in 2011 when he said he defeated me, at the tribunal, we proved that there were a lot of irregularities in that election. But through the use of federal might, the verdict was in his favour. That was unfair.
“Now we have not used any federal might, we have ensured a level playing ground. Apart from that, INEC is now stronger and more transparent. The use of the card readers has prevented many politicians in manipulating the elections. With card readers, there cannot be over-voting again. “What has changed again is that the cup of the Saraki dynasty is full as far as what people can tolerate.
People have become intolerable of the bad governance they have been experiencing in the last eight years. Eight years ago, when he left as the governor for the Senate, things were not as bad as they are now. Salaries of workers were paid then, but now workers are being owed.
“The current Abdulfatah Ahmed administration, which Saraki installed, has not performed at all. Of course, we cannot totally remove Saraki’s attitude to the APC government, a platform that he used to get the Senate Presidency; he worked against that party to become a minority in the National Assembly. Minority, in terms of leaders, and not in terms of membership; that is particularly important for us, especially Ilorin people, as he cannot handle trust.
“He used his position to work against Buhari. Buhari in Ilorin is a friend by virtue of his relationship with the late Major General Tunde Idiagbon. Ilorin people see the sincerity and credibility of Buhari.”
Another factor Oloriegbe said aided his victory was his campaign for the restoration of the cultural values and heritage of Ilorin Emirate. He noted that his proposal resonated with the people, particularly the masses who hitherto had been praying for a change in the status quo.
Besides, he said his campaign also resonated with the people because he was seen as one of them; born and bred in Ilorin, with his roots well established in the ancient city. According to him, “I put up a clear agenda; which we have not been having and which has never happened with my opponent; he will just generally say ‘I will take care of you’.
In Yoruba, he will say, ‘maa toju yin’. But what does that mean? What can you hold him or his government accountable for? That has been a missing gap. But if you look at my website and other media, you will see my agenda. “Second, I was able to demonstrate to the electorate in Ilorin that I am one of them; I grew up here, I understand their feelings.
I understand where we were and why we are in the current situation and I believe, to an extent, I understand what we need to do and I came up with a restoration of our values and heritage for a sustainable development.” Oloriegbe said as a former parliamentarian, he understands the nuances of the job and he is well prepared to work to ensure his constituency benefits maximally from the incoming administration.📎 🤔COMMENT BELOW...
