Eight-Year-Old Nigerian Boy Becomes Chess Champion In New York  Tanitoluwa Adewumi ,8 fled Nigeria with his family and now living in a homeless shelter in New York City while his asylum application pends has been crowned the state’s chess champion for his age group.
He won the state tournament for his group, from kindergarten through third grade, last weekend.
Tani and his family reportedly fled their home in Nigeria in 2017, from the horrors of the terrorist Boko Haram sect.
After Tani discovered the chess club, his mother, Oluwatoyin emailed them to say that while they could not afford to pay the fees attached, he was eager to participate.
