Netflix have selected South African series, Queen Sono as the first-ever African original series on the platform. Netflix’s announcement to produce African original series across the continent came as no surprise. In fact, we can’t help but wonder how this development would impact existing streaming platforms like Linda Ikeji TV, EbonyLife On and Iroko TV.
Queen Sono follows the life of a powerful secret agent who has to fight crime while dealing with conflict in her personal life. The lead character played by Pearl Thusi (Quantico) is described as a powerful female character in the same category as Claire Underwood in Emmy-winning
series, House of Cards and Jessica Jones.
Erik Barmack, Netflix’s vice president of international origins announced that the platform will further invest in local African content in 2019. Speaking about the upcoming show, he said:
“Over time, our roots will get deeper in Africa and South Africa, and we’re moving pretty quickly to that now, and plan to invest more in local content. Queen Sono” was created by multi-hypenate comedian-turned-director Kagiso Lediga and is being executive produced by Tamsin Andersson”.
