According to Japan’s imperial law, female members of the royal family will forfeit their status and entitlements should they marry men outside the royal class.
The law does not apply to men from the royal family – additionally, the law also forbids the princess and other women in her family from becoming queen.
CNN reports that her government will pay her $950,000 for living expenses after she renounces her privileges.
