Interpol chose South Korea's Kim Jong-yang as president for a 2-year term on Wednesday, defeating a Russian citizen whose candidature raised concerns in Europe and the United States about the Kremlin's risk of interference.
The 194 member states of Interpol, meeting in Dubai for their annual congress, chose Kim to succeed China's Meng Hongwei, who disappeared in September and then resigned after Chinese authorities said they were investigating suspected bribes.
Interpol said on Twitter that Kim, who served as a provisional president, was elected for a two-year term.
He said Argentina's Nestor Roncaglia was elected for a three-year term as vice-president for America.
Daily work is dealt with by Germany's Secretary General Jurgen Stock, but the presidency still enjoys influence.
Russia's Alexander Prokopchuk's candidacy, a major police general and one of four Interpol vice-presidents, led to concerns in Europe and the US about Russia's ability to use Interpol's power.
The U.S. said on Tuesday it supported Kim to lead the agency after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators accused Russia of exploiting the global body to settle scores and harass dissidents.
The Kremlin said on Tuesday that public opposition by a group of U.S. senators to the Russian candidate amounted to election meddling.
Kremlin critics oppose Russian for Interpol head.
In Europe, former Belgian Prime Minister and European Parliament member, Guy Verhofstadt, had said “Democratic and free countries may need to develop a parallel organisation” if Prokopchuk was elected.
“Russia has consistently misused Interpol to pursue its political opponents,” he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
Meng has not been seen since he disappeared during a trip to China from where he sent a letter to Interpol announcing his resignation.
Days after his wife reported him missing, Chinese authorities said he was under investigation.
