Gugulethu Sophia "Gugu" Mbatha-Raw MBE is an English actress, known for her role as Kelly in Black Mirror, Dido Elizabeth Belle in Belle. She British beauty took off the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and took on her greatest role yet as a UNHCR ambassador.Her lastest call of duty was to visit Rwanda and Burundi.
She captioned;
Phew... my UNHCR first ever #instaTakeover has come to a close... in case you missed it on @refugees here are some highlights! (A special shout out to the dynamic camp manager Paul Kenya - pic 3 - who brings light, ingenuity and positive vibes to the most challenging of situations... a true inspiration! Thank you for your wonderful work ⭐️ It’s places like these – UNHCR’s reception centre in Mahama refugee camp – where the scale of UNHCR’s operations really hits you. There are 57,000 people here who rely on us. It’s a hive of activity, with hundreds of refugees attending appointments here each day. It’s vital work, ensuring that refugees have access to healthcare, legal advice, food and shelter. I met Rehema who was 9 months pregnant and with a two year old baby – she was exhausted and overwhelmed but relieved to be safe.

Over the last week I’ve been in Rwanda with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. I’ve met Congolese and Burundian refugees, who have fled from two of the most forgotten crises in the world, and learnt about some amazing projects that have been set up in the camps to help build livelihoods and empower the refugees there. I’ll be posting about the trip over on @refugees - my first ever IG takeover! Please head on over and follow their profile to join our journey!
.
I can’t wait to share more about the vital work UNHCR is doing to support and protect refugees and asylum seekers – with a record 68.5 million people forcibly displaced around the world, there’s never been a more critical time for UNHCR’s lifesaving work.

I met Burundian refugee women who use traditional Rwandan weaving techniques to create beautiful bags and baskets to sell. It’s part of UNHCR’s #MADE51 initiative, which helps connect refugee-made products with international markets. No one wants to be in a refugee-like situation. No one wants to feel dependent on aid. The women told me that the money they earn and the skills they learn make them feel empowered and independent. They feel like they’ve regained a sense of control over their futures. Everyone I spoke to found a sense of solace and healing in this creative female forum... a place to share problems and build a community of women. 📷 by @jordi.matas. #refugees #WithRefugees #Rwanda #Mahama #UNHCR #empower #womenartists #girlpower

First Burundian drumming lesson at Mahama camp... keeping culture alive #withrefugees these guys can JUMP! It was a sweaty and joyful send-off (Had to call on the Zulu ancestors for some of the moves 😉🤸🏽‍♂️❤️)

Angelique Renaissance emits a radiance that truly humanises our perception of what it means to be a refugee. ☀️She had just arrived from the reception centre into Mahama camp. As soon as she was registered she was given a box full of essential items such as cups, plates, knives, forks, pots, stirring spoons as well as a solar light and a mattress. She was so happy to be somewhere safe and to feel protected – despite such a desperate journey her relief and joy at being somewhere safe was tangible. #humanising 📷 by @jordi.matas. #refugees #WithRefugees #Rwanda
