There were few female Nigerian filmmakers in the industry during Nollywood’s early years.
Thanks totrailbalzing directors like the late Amaka Igwe, who kicked the door open for women today, we have more women working behind-the-camera as directors and producers.
Here are some of them.
1. Genevieve Nnaji
Genevieve moved behind-the-scenes to produce the award-winning, Road To Yesterday. This was followed by her directiorial debut Lionheart which has now become the first Nigerian Netflix original film.
2. Kemi Adetiba
After starting out as a music video director for Banky W,Wizkid,Nuyola, she directed the commercially successful, The Wedding Party in 2016. Kemi’s latest film King of Boys is a box office hit one week after its release.
3. Dolapo Adeleke (Lolawdee)
She is an AMVCA winner known for her hit web series This Is It, Lowladee has a knack for making films that tug at the soul. She has also produced and directed several short films including Brave, Be My Guest and The Call.
4. Bolanle Austen-Peters
Bolanle launched her filmmaking career in 2016 with the award-winning 93 Days, centered around the Nigerian Ebola crisis of 2014. The Managing Director of Terra Kulture is currently working on a new project, The Bling Lagosians.
5. Emem Isong
Emem paved the way for modern female Nigerian filmmakers and produced some of the most iconic movies of new Nollywood. Her popular productions include Games Women Play, Critical Decision and Reloaded.Emem Isong discovered Dakore Egbuson
6. Mary Remmy-Njoku
Mary Remmy Njoku is the actress and filmmaker who founded Rok Studios in 2013. Under the production company, she has produced several films and TV series including Husbands of Lagos and Single Ladies.
7. Mildred Okwo
Mildred has produced a number of movies including the award-winning The Meeting and romantic comedy, Suru’Lere. She also runs The Audrey Silva Company (TASC), which she co-founded with actress, Rita Dominic.
8. Blessing Egbe
With projects like Lekki Wives and Two Brides and A Baby, she established herself as one filmmaker to look out for. Following the success of her 2018 film, The Women, she is working on a new movie, The Ten Virgins.
9. Funke Akindele-Bello
Funke is known for producing hit TV series Jenifa where she stars as the main character. She is also the co-producer of another series, Industreet and other Yoruba films.
10. Tope Oshin
After working as the only female director on TV series, Tinsel for 5 years, Tope Oshin moved on to produce her own films. From New Money to the upcoming Up North, her movies are certainly some of the most hyped Nollywood films of 2018.
11. Ifeoma Chukwuogo
Ifeoma’s moving short film Bariga Sugar remains one of the best Nigerian short films we have seen. Wewe can’t wait to watch her first feature film.
12. Nadine Ibrahim
Nadine’s short film, Through Her Eyes draws us in from the first shot and pushes us to look through the characters’ eyes until the very end.
13. Ema Edosio
Ema’s fast-paced film, Kasala is one the 4 Nigerian movies showing at AFRIFF 2018.
14. Mo Abudu
Mo is the most influential women on this list. In less than a decade after launching the EbonyLife , she has produced commercially-successful films like The Wedding Party, Royal Hibiscus Hotel, and Fifty.
15. Omoni Oboli
One of the reasons why Omoni Oboli is an important figure in Nollywood is her feminist stance. In a patriarchial society such as ours, successful women are expected to ‘tone down’ their voices and be more likable. However, rather than making typical rom-coms, Omoni has found a way to touch on gender equality and child marriage in her Wives On Strike franchise.
16.Caroline Ekanem Danjuma made her screen debut in 2004, starring in Chico Ejiro's popular films.Caroline Ekanem Danjuma made an official action to focus on her family and her production company, Guepard Productions.The films she produced include Stalker,The Banker,Head Gone,While You Slept and The Cupboard .
Ini Edo began her film career in 2000, and has featured in more than 100 movies since that time. In 2013, she was a judge for the Miss Black Africa Uk Pageant. The United Nations appointed her as the United Nations Habitat Youth Envoy in 2011.
She has produced I'll Take My Chances,Weekend Getaway
CEO of Oasis Medspa Freda Francis bag 10 nominations at the TINFF for movie THE ISLAND. This is impressive for a first time producer.
