Super Eagles players and officials made history as the first passengers to fly from Asaba airport on an international flight to South Africa.
The three African champions were scheduled earlier to travel by road to Benin to catch the chosen flight to Johannesburg for the end of this weekend of AFCON 2019 against South Africa.
However, the aviation authorities who had stated that Max Air Boeing 737 aircraft could not be able to take off from Asaba airport due to technical problems, then gave the company a clear signal to land there to choose a Nigerian contingent.
The news of the first international flight from the airport launched officials of the government of the State of the Delta and indigenous people of the state capital to frenzied celebrations.
The Boeing 737 aircraft belonging to Max Air, one of Nigeria’s leading airlines touched down at exactly 5:22pm at the Asaba Airport to palpable excitement with members of the state Executive Council, a delegation from the Palace of the Asagba of Asaba and Deltans on ground to witness the historic event.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Captain Yahaya Pam, Pilot of the Max Air, described the facilities at the airport among the best in the country and of international standard.
Speaking with journalists at the airport, Captain Yahaya Pam said the Asaba Airport runway was among the top three in the country. “It is very smooth, good and long in line with international standards,” adding that the ramp was topnotch.
He praised the government of the state for the airport facilities. Okowa represented by the Secretary of the State Government, Hon. Festus Ovie Agas, described the event as a dream come true and a great achievement in complying with the SMART agenda of the state government. He explained that the recent update of the airport, especially the improvement of the track, made the feat possible, emphasizing that a provisional approval was given to the airport to transport the equipment to South Africa for its party against Bafana Bafana. Obi Ngozi Kowea, leader of the Asagba delegation at Palacio Asaba, said that with the success of the landing and subsequent takeoff of the first international flight, the critics of Governor Okowa have proved wrong and they gave the security that people burrowed fully behind him in elections next year and during his term. In his observations, Delta State Information Commissioner Patrick Ukah and the director of the airport project Asaba, Mr. Austin Ayemidejor, said that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Agency, NCAA, has updated the Asaba airport to category six. The members of the Super Eagles boarded the plane with the code number 5N-MHM at 6:55 p.m. with a great spirit on the way to the Republic of South Africa before Saturday's clash with the Bafana Bafana in an AFCON qualifying match 2019. The contingent arrived in Johannesburg at midnight in Nigeria.
