The World Health Organization and the United Nations Human Rights have called for the elimination of the practice of virginity testing.
In a statement released by the organizations, there is no examination, whether scientific or clinical, that can prove a girl or woman has had sex.
Although, it happens in many African cultures, virginity testing is said to be a violation of the human rights of girls and women. The examination is also said to be painful, humiliating and traumatic.
Doctors and health workers are advised to desist from such tests as it is unethical and potentially harmful.
