President Mulatu Teshome of Ethiopia filed resignation request to the Ethiopian parliament .
Teshome, who has been the Head of State of Eastern Africa since October 2013, presented his letter of resignation to the 2 houses of the Ethiopian parliament. They are expected to consider their resignation. The houses would eventually appoint their successor in an extraordinary joint session . The joint extraordinary session of the Ethiopian Parliament on Thursday "will discuss the president's resignation request and will elect a new president," according to the ENA news agency. The president, who directed his Ph.D. studies in international law at the University of Beijing in China, was unanimously appointed as President of Ethiopia on October 7, 2013, while serving as Ambassador of Ethiopia to Turkey. Teshome is a member of the Oromo Democratic Party, one of the four member parties of the Ethiopian Popular Democratic Revolutionary Front.
His imminent resignation also came shortly after Ethiopian government’s cabinet reshuffle. The Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives, the Ethiopian parliament’s lower house, earlier approved the appointment of 16 new cabinet members upon the endorsement of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in which only four of the previous cabinet’s members remained in their positions.
Teshome, 63, had served in various high-level Ethiopian government offices and ministries as deputy minister of economic development and cooperation, minister of agriculture, and spokesperson of the house of federation.
