Asaba 2018: Oluwatobiloba Amusan Clinches Gold for Nigeria’s First Medal

Oluwatobiloba Amusan has won Nigeria's first medal in the current 21st Senior Africa Athletics Championship, Asaba 2018. The 21-year-old champion won the gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles event with a time of 12:86 seconds, before the South African runner, Rickenette Steenkamp at 13: 18s. Amusan is the first Nigerian to win the Commonwealth 100m hurdles, and gold and bronze medals were won at 100m hurdles and 4 x 100m relays at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. His performance triggered a medal rush for Nigeria as Enekwechi Chukwuebuka also won the gold medal in men's shot put, while compatriot Temilola Ogunrinde clinched silver on the shooter hammer hammer. Meanwhile, two Nigerian runners took the top spots at women's 400m round 1 in the morning as Yinka Ajayi defeated the South African sprinter, Semenya Caster to win in round 1 under 52: 38s while his compatriot Patience George was picked up the fourth position with time of 53: 39s.
Amusan latest feat will see her represent Africa at the IAAF Continental Cup at Ostrava, Czech Republic in September, and she believes it’s the reward for hard work.
“I am not surprised, because I have prepared hard for this all year. I don’t care about timing when it comes to championships.
“So, you really don’t have to focus on time but to go out there and compete.
“I am really excited to run against the world’s best, even though I have been racing with them all year. But my target at the Continental Cup is to do the best I can.
“After this Championships, I will head back to the U.S., prepare for the next IAAF Diamond League events, such as the ones in Birmingham (UK), Zurich (Switzerland) and Brazil.”FOLLOW fb.me/jaiyeorieblog m.me/jaiyeorieblog ... spill TEA ABOUT THE TOPIC ABOVE.... Easy on Shade #jaiyeorie
