Founded in 1998 by Victor Anoliefo, Ike Anya, Ferdinand Agu and Ken Ike Okere, the Abuja Literary Society (ALS), is an initiative that brings together writers, bibliophiles, book aficionados, poets, intellectuals and everyone with an affinity for the creative arts to an enabling and relaxing atmosphere where potentials are actualized, supported and grown.
For the past twenty Literary Society events which are Friday night and Mic Nights where established, pieces to members and receive feedback; the ALS the book for the with in-depth Jams where diverse to speak ok their books and share their literary experiences years, the Abuja has developed held every almost ranges from Open writers, aspiring or present their of the audience constructive Book Club where month is discussed analysis; and Book authors are invited.
Other than the regular weekly events that are held, ALS also hosts a Poetry Slam quarterly where cash prizes and other additional benefits are awarded to the top three winners of the spoken word contest as well as the monthly Teen Talk which engages young adults on modern contemporary issues whilst encouraging their creative development.
In lieu of its twentieth anniversary, the Abuja Literary Society has decided to celebrate its birthday with the inauguration of the Abuja Literary and Arts Festival, ALitFest – an avenue for the society to invite Nigerians, as a united people and the world at large to join in its commune of literary and other creative activities. The literary festival, themed “Nigeria to the World” will run for three days in the early summer month of July, from the 5th to 7th at the Amazing Abuja Exhibition Pavilion and offers a range of activities for people of all ages.
With its proposed theme, ALitFest promises a profusion of activities that present Nigerian creative and artistic activities and Nigerian indigenous artists to the world. The Abuja Literary and Arts Festival aspires to share with the world the united commune, intellectual platform and cordial ambience that the Abuja Literary Society stands for on a larger stage through adventures such as;
Poetry and Prose master classes which will be facilitated by experienced literary icons as Dike Chukwumerije and Ishmael Beah. These Master classes will be offered to twenty-five aspirants for each category who will each communicate one on one with the facilitators who will help each and every one of the aspirants to improve on their literary skills; An Open Reading session where aspiring writers and veteran publishers will commune to listen to short excerpts from manuscripts of unpublished writers; Book Readings and Panel discussions for those who enjoy cerebral conversations with topics ranging from media to art and from politics to literature. Over the course of three days, 5th-7th July, 2018, eleven (11) panel discussions and Book Readings will be held on diverse topics with writers and discussants such as Ayisha Osori, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Steve Gukas, Layla Ali Othman, Othuke Omniabohs, Segun Adeniyi, Bolaji Abdullahi, Japheth Omojuwa, Ono Bello and many more.
A Grand Poetry Slam where previous Slam finalists or winners from all parts of the country will compete for grand prizes up to Three Hundred and Fifty thousand naira and a chance to represent Nigeria at an international poetry contest in Chad; Children’s Creativity Workshop in partnership with the Young Readers Library where children from ages 6 – 16, who will be given free entry to the festival grounds, will be engaged on a literary playground and a crafts section; Art exhibition in partnership with I Can Draw Africa where indigenous Nigerian paintings and other art will be displayed; A music concert with invited artistes who will woo the crowd with the symphony in melodious words; A Mini Fashion Fair where affordable and unique Nigerian designers will display their work; A nature hike for the dauntless individuals with proficient hikers who will lead the team to explore the beauty of Nigerian heights; And a daily festival bar where eponymous craft beverages (alcoholic and non- alcoholic), specially brewed for the festival, named after famous Nigerian literary and arts icons will be served.

ALitFest promises to be interesting, engaging, family friendly and most importantly, encompassing of all ages, sexes, races and tribes in its bid to promote a much needed unity in Nigeria as well as presenting the unified commune of Nigerian creative minds, to the world.
