20 years after,?Ethiopia and Eritrea officially declare an end to its border war

The presidents of Ethiopia and Eritrea have signed a statement that says "the state of war that existed between the two countries has ended," the Eritrean information minister said.   Before that, a peace agreement that ended the 1998-1999 border war between the two countries has never been fully implemented and there have been tensions between neighbors since then.

The statement was made at a benchmark meeting between the leaders of both countries in the capital of Eritrea, Asmara. The meeting between the President of Eritrea, Isaias Afewerki and the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, was the first among the neighbors' heads of state for almost two decades.   On Monday, the leaders agreed that "a new era of peace and friendship has begun," said information minister in Eritrea, Yemane Gebre Meskel, on Twitter.
