Opposition candidate and former head of the military junta, Julius Maada Bio, was sworn in as Sierra Leone's new president on Wednesday, a few hours after the election commission announced its victory in a second round.
It is now facing the difficult task of rebuilding the economy of the impoverished West African nation that has been driven by the world's deadliest Ebola epidemic and a global fall in commodity prices.
Representing the People's Party of Sierra Leone (SLPP), Maada Bio won 51.81 percent of the vote in the March 31 poll, according to the results announced Wednesday by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).
He defeated Samura Kamara, former Foreign Minister and Congress candidate of the All People's Congress (APC), who had a slight lead on the partial results base earlier in the day but who finally won 48.19% .Räägi sõbrale... #AFRICA
