Iranian companies are prohibited from registering their import orders using the US dollar, the Financial Tribune reported on Thursday.
The policy has been issued by the Department of Industry, Mines and Trade and will not apply to registrations before the above date.
The policy was in line with an official request from the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) and was specifically meant to cope with the fluctuations of the dollar, reported the TV channel Press.
This change should not create major problems for traders, said Mehdi Kasraeipour, CBI's director of foreign exchange rules and policies.
This was due to the dollar's low share in Iran's trading activities, said Kasraeipour.
"It has been a long time since the Iranian banking sector can not use the dollar as a result of sanctions," he said.
Kasraeipour said Iranian traders should inform their foreign suppliers to change the base currency of the US dollar to other currencies so that relevant import documents can be processed at Iranian entry points.
As of Wednesday, a new CBI electronic system for the purchase of currencies has become operational on a larger scale.
The system offers all currencies to importers and exchangers, with the exception of a handful that includes the Japanese yen, the South Korean won and the Thai baht.
