Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been appointed to lead a team of observers for Sierra Leone's general elections scheduled for 7 March 2018. He will lead the election observation mission of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA). Jonathan left Nigeria for Freetown on Friday. A statement by its spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, announced the appointment of the mission, saying the mission had observers from civil society organizations and election management bodies from across the continent. Eze said the former president "is happy to participate in the process of supporting peaceful and transparent elections in Sierra Leone". EISA is an election-based, non-profit organization that works with national, regional and pan-African organizations. African and global partners across the African continent.
It is based in South Africa with field offices across the continent and has supported or observed over 100 electoral and political processes in Africa. Its assignment in Sierra Leone is in line with the organisation’s “vision of an African continent where democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation are upheld in a peaceful environment.”
