How Fela Anikulapo Kuti married 27 women on the same day + rare photos

History was made on February 20, 1978 when the African music legend and Afrobeat singer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti had married 27 women on the same day ,all her back up dancers. The reports say that Fela got that job by putting a notebook and asking any of the girls who wanted to marry her to write their names and immediately did what they did. And on February 20, Fela called the priests of Ifa (reportedly 12) to join the spouses in the holy marriage at the Parisona Hotel in Anthony, Lagos. A small number of spouses married to their parents agreed but the marriage proceeded however. The event is joined by members of the band, friends and family. Fela puts the notes on their heads, offers some words and tries to marry certificates. Then he interacts with a rotating system of having only 12 of them living in him at a particular time. At the first marriage, she had sex with one, then another, then one to 27 was complete and then she took everything in Ghana for the honeymoon shortly afterwards.Another reason why the marriage held was to protect Fela, and his wives, from claims from authorities that Fela was kidnapping the women.

Yes, all the 27 wives with Alex Conde, the one that married the late Chief Okotie Eboh’s daughter. He took us to Ghana for the honeymoon and from there Fela brought other girls. The other wives were always jealous because Fela paid a lot of attention to me. Fela used to tell us to smoke marijuana or he would not accept us as his own people.
