Godwin Tom Talks Talent Manager Duties In The 21st Century

The former Wizkid Manager, Godwin Tom, explains to his followers the duties of the 21st century talent manager. In an instagram post, talent management class the renown artiste manager currently in charge of Wande Coal, Ice Prince, Beverly Naya, Yung6ix tweeted:

There are several definitions of a talent manager in entertainment. However, one I use is simply based on how the changes in the way business is done in the industry has affected the job of a 21st century talent manager. So the new job or role of a talent manager is Business Development: Identifying and/or creating opportunities that help create revenue streams for the artist or talent. In simple terms, make money for the talent. .
With this in mind, managers have to truly focus on what is important everyday. You have to know what activities should take most of your day and identify how this task MUST contribute to your results! .
Something we can learn from sales people is the use of their TIME. .
Managers in the business are often overwhelmed by unnecessary meetings and tasks that aren’t directly related to their goals. Mostly because we are following leads and most times we are just being hopeful. Most times our days are filled with activities that do not have anything to do with our primary focus… Generating revenue. Sad thing is these things are also important. As hard as it is for a new talent manager, you are forced to multitask… but as your artist or talent grows, you MUST move from being the sales PERSON to the sales MANAGER. Learn to train and then to delegate. So that you can focus on the goal while the other tasks are done. .
Word of mouth remains the most effective method of marketing… Face to face meetings remain the most effective way of making a lasting impression. These days, we are too focused on technology and social media. Softwares seem to be occupying processes. Follow up should involve building a relationship with potential clients. Though softwares help you stay connected to your customer, it does not help you fix any problems. Most problems require a relationship to resolve. Focus on building more of those… especially in this business. Updating systems can never be better than actually selling your talents and artists to potential clients. .
