Chinese scientists Break Key Barrier By Cloning Monkeys

They have cloned monkeys using the same technique that produced Dolly the sheep two decades ago. This is breaking a technical barrier that could open the door to human copying. Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, two identical long-tailed macaques, were born eight and six weeks ago, making them the first primates - the order of mammals that includes monkeys, monkeys and humans - to clone to from a non-embryonic cell.  It has been achieved through a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which involves transferring the nucleus of a cell, including its DNA, into an ovum whose nucleus has been removed.  Researchers at the Institute of Neuroscience at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai said their work should be a boon for medical research by enabling the study of diseases in genetically uniform monkey populations.
