China bans hip hop, actors with tattoos from appearing on TV

Chinese government censors have fallen on television programs featuring "tattoo artist, hip-hop culture, subculture (non-mainstream culture) and decadent culture," according to news portal Sina. Rappers PG One and GAI, both featured in the massively popular "Rap of China" show, are permitted for content running against the values of the Communist Party.

PG One was recently forced to make a public apology for lewd lyrics in his song “Christmas Eve,” while GAI was dropped from the television program “The Singer” with no reason given, Reuters reports.
China’s top media regulator, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China (SAPPRFT), outlined rules for television stations Friday that include not using actors “whose heart and morality are not aligned with the party and whose morality is not noble.”

China also recently banned a number of popular Western artists from performing in the country, including Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Maroon 5 for their ties to the Dalai Lama, and Justin Bieber for “bad behavior.”
