UN advocate Meghan Markle delivered the speech at the UN Women's conference in 2015. Ms Markle said she was watching a TV program whilst at elementary school when a dish-washing liquid commercial came onto the screen and what sparked her attention was its tagline.
It read: "Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans."
She said she was uncomfortable about this, then two boys in her class made it worse by saying: "Yeah, that's where women belong, in the kitchen."
Meghan said. "I remember feeling shocked and angry and also just feeling so hurt — it just wasn't right and something needed to be done."
She went home and told her dad about it and he encouraged her to write letters expressing her grievance. Meghan wrote letters to the then First Lady Hillary Clinton, TV journalist Linda Ellerbee, and attorney Gloria Allred, in addition to addressing a letter to the soap manufacturer. To Markle's surprise, she received "letters of encouragement" from all three women, and a camera crew even came to her house in Los Angeles to cover the story.
A month after she wrote the letter, the liquid soap manufacturer, Procter & Gamble, changed the commercial from 'Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans' to 'People all over America'.
Since then, she's been advocating for equality. She went on to say that women must be given a seat at the table and if that doesn't happen then women should create their own table, and the time to start is now.
