Nigeria's largest metropolitan city, Lagos, has gained recognition as an epicenter for global fashion. Born and raised in Lagos, Lisa Folawiyo says the city is electric. "Lagos never sleeps," says Folawiyo, whose hometown is a constant source of inspiration for her. "In the midst of traffic jams, the sounds of the generator and the rush of everyday city, the city remains charming - scattering through seams of art, culture and music," she adds.
The merging of Western African textiles and prints with modern cutting is key to Folawiyo's success as a world-renowned fashion designer. Her designs were worn by girls like Lupita Nyong'o and Solange Knowles. This amalgam of accepting traditional African fabrics and manufacturing processes with the influences of the Western world is what Folawiyo believes is turning Lagos into fashion capital as it is today. "Fashion in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole is and will always be a great part of our culture and identity." And, through fashion design, I got a wonderful platform to tell my stories to the rest of the world. " To really take the sights and sounds of Lagos, Lisa suggests they begin with the island of Lagos. "From Campbell Street, to the Wide Street, to the Military Street, so much to discover."
