Lawyer Jailed 3 Years For Saying Women Who Wear Ripped Jeans Should Be Raped




The Egyptian court  condemned a lawyer who said that a woman wearing jeans should be raped up to three years in prison, the justice source said.  The prison sentence against Nabiha al-Wahsha was rendered in absentia because the lawyer, who was previously released, did not attend the hearing on Saturday. Wahsh's comments during the television program sparked rage and complaints to the state attorney, who decided to put him on trial. Wahsh said it was a "national duty" to rape women wearing tight, torn jeans.  The prosecution accused him of "publicly encouraging abuse of the law" and "spreading malicious reports and statements intended to disrupt the public order ... and harm the public interest".  An appeal may be imposed. Egyptian women have long complained about the widespread sexual harassment the government has been working on to address more stringent laws for several years. ...
