Joe Okei-Odumakin Demands Probe Of Atrocities Committed By SARS

Joe Okei-Odumakin, national organizer, Nigerians Unite Against Terror (NUAT), called for the investigation into "atrocities" committed by bad eggs within the Special Anti-Theft Squad (SARS). SARS has come under intense criticism recently, with Nigerians calling for its demolition, prompting the announcement by the Inspector General of Police that the unit will be reorganized. The police unit has been accused of alleged brutality and indiscriminate human rights violations by many Nigerians. Relying on this issue, Mr. Odumakin called on the federal government to immediately set up an inquiry committee to determine the number and cases of human rights violations perpetrated by SARS in the past. She stated that any reorganization carried out by the police could not be considered complete without a full investigation of all alleged violations. "It is the responsibility of all Nigerians in general, not just some agitators or members of civil society, to demand a reorganization of SARS, and even though the strategic role of force is crucial in our country, it should not not be considered a license for arbitrariness on the part of its population, "said Mr Odumakin. "What SARS needs as an organization is the same as all security agencies, even SARS has become synonymous with arbitrariness beyond the imagination of so many Nigerians, as can be seen in the agitations demanding its abolition " "What we are asking as a people is an immediate reorganization of the team and an investigation of all the atrocities that may have been committed by these bad elements within the team." Investigation group be set up by the government, anyone found guilty should be fired and charged in court to deter others.
