University of Lagos name was retained because it was an institution established by a parliamentary act.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan wanted to rename after late politician and philanthropist Moshood Abiole.
Rahamon Bello, the deputy Chancellor of the University of Lagos, has published it at the NAN Forum in Lagos.
He said: "The University of Lagos is the first university that the federal government will set up in Nigeria, historically, to go and find out in 1962.
"Ibadan (University of Ibadan) was a faculty when a University of Lagos was founded.
"It was the first to establish the Parliament Act.
"That is why the (former) President of Goodluck Jonathan had a difficult name change and on that basis we could get the name back.
"After UNILAG, UI has now gained its status as a federal university.
"The other universities that appeared that time and before the University of Lagos are not federal universities.
'' Nsukka, ABU and Ife were then all regional universities.
"Later, the federal government later took over. As a federal university, Lagos was number one.
"And the government has acquired land for the University of Lagos in that environment. We have documents."
NAN reports that Bello became the supreme chancellor in May 2012 and confirmed it as the 11th VC of the same year.
His mandate expires on November 11th
