When ugly is cool, rest assured that Zimbabwe will have a representative at the opening ceremony of the Mr Ugly Africa beauty contest to be held next year in South Africa.
Zimbabwe was the pioneer of the competition, which celebrates the "ugly men", and on November 25, 13 men will compete for the single title.
"The winner must have something that goes beyond looks - a good character is one of the key elements we're looking for," said David Machowa, contest organizer.
The competition began as a local city competition in 2009 and Machowa saw the potential and made it a national event in 2012. He believes the competition has legs and hopes it will expand even further.
"Next year, if things are possible, we could have Mr. Ugly World," Machowa said.
The Ugandan outgoing Ugly Zimbabwe is Mison Sere (42), father of three children then unemployed. He beat three-time winner William Masvinu who came in as first prince.
"There is no limit to the number of times you can enter or win the contest as long as they are ugly," says Machowa.
Past winners include a traditional healer, a nightclub bouncer and a rank vampire.
The winners will participate in an African version of the event in South Africa in 2018.
