Kenya has adopted a directive requiring convictions of polygons of all foreign students and an additional certification of drug enforcement from Nigerian students seeking a study visa in Kenya.
It is expected that the directive announced by the Kenya Immigration Department will come into force in January next year to offer a guarantee that students will not enter the country to commit a crime, the senior immigration official said.
"The police should serve as an additional guarantee that these individuals do not have criminal record. Some claim to come here to study but simply use it as a front to engage in activities that could pose a security risk," said Director for immigration Gordon Kihalangwa's Business Daily news portal.
Kihalangwa said that an additional request by the Nigerian National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) from Nigerian students would only be applied to "persons with questionable character," the report states.
Educational institutions were also focused on presenting these documents before students can issue passes that should be kept by foreign students at all times.
Kenya currently deals with illegal immigration operations in the country because hundreds were arrested and deported for immigration and criminal offenses.
On Wednesday, 60 Ethiopian immigrants were arrested from a residential estate in Nairobi in a security swing.
The police said Kenya used the transit route in South Africa or Europe.
Last year, at least 50 Nigerians were arrested in Nairobi and later deported due to over-visa.
"Every week, at our own expense, we have even deported five unregistered individuals who pose a risk to our society. A new rule for students will go a long way in strengthening our struggle," said Kihalangwa Immigration Director.
