Senator Dino Melaye received the Senator of the Senate Press Award on Monday.
Senator Kogi West District praised as a vice-member of the Senate and for sponsoring 15 accounts, including the law on anti-piracy justice that was adopted and awaiting the president's proposal.
The Nigerian journalist syndicate (NUJ) has canceled the award, declaring it unlawful.
Corps nominated Melaye and 14 other Senators for awards at Sheraton, Abuja Hotel.
In separate statements Monday, National President NUJ, Abdulwaheed Odusile, and President of FCT Union of Ella Abechi, said the Union had canceled the proposal for award and declared it unlawful.
The NUJ announced that Press Corp from the Senate was not recognized by the constitution of the NUJ and as such, had no right to locate the reward lawmakers.
"The union dissociates from the so-called Conference because it was not in accordance with the provision of the NUJ Constitution on such issues, that is, reversal of the award," Odusile said.
Abechi also called for a prize-giving ceremony, adding that it is illegal and lacks legitimacy with the NUJ Constitution.
"Media experts are not legitimate bodies to decide who gives the rewards," he said.
However, the event took place on Monday night at the Sheraton, Abuja hotel, Melaye received awards.
The senator also received the same award in 2016.
