Angolan President João Lourenço Monday said his government’s actions would be based on solving people’s problems and the diversification of the economy.
President Lourenço made the remarks in his landmark State of the Nation address in parliament.
In a speech that lasted about an hour, President Lourenço also said the reinforcement of the democratic system would be another priority of his government.
“We will also promote transparency and equal opportunities in public tenders,” he said.
President Lourenço said the government would invest more in the justice sector to fight corruption, reform the laws on corruption and promote the private sector.
He also promised to invest more in agriculture and in local manufacturing to stop the over reliance on oil.
The Angolan economy has been severely affected by the sharp decline in oil prices and the government sees diversification as the way out.
Oil production continues to account for approximately 50 per cent of Angola’s GDP, 80 per cent of government revenue and 95 per cent of its exports.
Agriculture’s contribution to the GDP – including forestry and fisheries – stands at about 8 per cent in Angola.
The non-oil sector in Angola is mainly dominated by agriculture, banking, communications, fisheries, state-owned retail stores and diamond production.
Prior to independence in 1975, Angola was one of the largest cotton producers globally.
The southern African state was also the world’s fourth largest coffee producer in the pre-independence era.
The decimation of the Angolan landscape during the 27 year-long civil war destroyed the cotton-growing industry and other agricultural industries.
Mr Lourenço was inaugurated as the country’s president 20 days ago, replacing Jose Eduardo dos Santos, after 38 years at the helm.
The governing MPLA won the August 23 General Election with 61.07 per cent vote and 150 MPs.
Unita came second with 26.7 per cent of the votes cast and 51 MPs, while Casa-Ce was third with 9.4 per cent and 16 MPs.
The election was Angola’s fourth since independence from Portugal in 1975 and the third since the end of the war in 2002.
The State of the Nation address is a constitutional requirement and happens at the opening of every parliamentary year.
It aims at focusing on the policies established to solve the main issues and the promotion of wellbeing and the development of the country. ❤ ❤ 2348050417551 available for a good time ... spill TEA.... Easy on Shade #jaiyeorie
