Universal Music Group (UMG) is set to officially launch in Nigeria, just about a year after its rival Sony Music set up an office in Lagos.

Sony Music as a global entity has built a very respectable identity for itself as we have seen them push musicians from various parts of the globe to new heights of stardom and groundbreaking career achievements. Nigerian Popstar Wizkid has also been a benefactor of a Sony Music affiliation. The social and industrial impact of Sony Music Worldwide cannot be denied but we cannot say the same about Sony Music Africa.
Universal Music is flagging a lot of potentials as news making the rounds have informed us that the supposed Nigerian operations of the company will be headed by an array of local Nigerian music professionals – same catch was used by Sony Music West Africa.
Universal Music is yet to make an official announcement so the true purpose of their launch in Nigeria remains unknown. It is however important to point out that there is already a long list of Nigerian music distribution middlemen who delight in ripping musicians off their profits and it would be tragic to see UMG go the same route.
Global music companies are very welcome to do business in Nigeria/Africa. Our arms are opened but uncertainty is slowly clouding our hearts. We will continue to give Sony Music West Africa the benefits of doubt’s and also look forward to the future that Universal Music brings.
